The Message of Mercy

Read Jonah 3 with emphasis on 3:4 and 3:9
  1. Why do you think Jonah was initially hesitant to deliver God’s message to Nineveh? How might fear, prejudice, or personal feelings have played a role in his reluctance?  For deeper consideration, what is the significance of giving Nineveh "40 days" that may have tainted Jonah's desire to give the message?

  2. Jonah’s message was short and direct, yet it led to a city-wide response of repentance. What does this tell us about the power of God’s Word, even when delivered imperfectly? Ironically, Jonah has benefitted from the answer to this question in 2:9.
How does 1 Corinthians 1:21 support this idea, and how have you seen God work through simple or unexpected messages in your life?

  3. The king and people of Nineveh responded to Jonah’s message with extreme humility and immediate action. What does their response (fasting, wearing burlap, praying, and turning from evil) teach us about true repentance? How can we apply this kind of intentional response to God’s conviction in our own lives?

  4. Read Nahum 3:1-19 and Genesis 6:13. Use a Bible Dictionary or word study website to define the biblical usage of "violence."  What are the elements of the biblical usage? How do you see “violence” or malicious behavior showing up in your life or community today? What practical steps can you take to turn away from such behaviors and align with God’s call to compassion?

  5. God relented from destroying Nineveh when He saw their genuine repentance. What does this reveal about God’s character and His desire for humanity? How does this encourage you to respond to God’s mercy in your own life, especially when confronted with your own sins?
